The high CPU levels are just no fun

So after a lot of frustrating hours, I think I finally figured out how to sometimes beat the computer teams on the higher levels - world class, legendary (seems hardest for some reason), and ultimate.

I wanted to do this because I embarked a quest to win all the "fixed" cups in the single player mode in FUT. I want to see if there is a special achievement to gain by doing so. I have by now gotten through all of them except the Ultimate team cup, which I just started and won the first game on. As a side note, the Bronze Shield one was probably the toughest even though it was only world-class, because I had to beat Real Madrid AND Barca; I ended up winning it by using a super-pacey rare bronze team that I copied from an entry on the Futhead site ("a little bronze team", this one: http://www.futhead.com/15/squads/8314498/).

The game starts really falling apart in my opinion at those levels, because of the way EA chose to increase the difficulty levels. The rapid passing in attack by the CPU means my "in control" defensive player keeps switching too, which inevitably leaves me exposed to a shot. The defense otherwise really stinks, with CPU controlled players just standing there, never closing anything down. Of course that never happens on the other side, and the CPU's defenders are always aggressive and react instantly. The ability of the CPU to turn on a dime without losing speed over and over again, and just to keep the ball in general, is unreal, and not something my players can do. The CPU can also "see" all its players on the field, so can pass to the off-screen and often does, whereas it's much more difficult for the human to do the same. Tackling seems to most times simply give the ball back to the CPU - it's very rare to actually dispossess them. The only saving grace is that the CPU misses a lot in front of goal. By the way, anyone else noticed how your CBs can always win headers if you head back in the direction that the shot came from?

The thing that was throwing me off is that at levels up to professional, I play the game the way I normally do, which is attacking focused (I typically start in "attacking" or "ultra attacking" mode, and I love using 433). I like to create opportunities by running and passing quickly, and having a flowing game pleasing to the eye with a good chance for lots of goals. Sure, real life isn't always like that, but part of the fun of FIFA for me has always been that I could influence the games to be more like those that I enjoy watching unfold in real life, and not the boring super-tactical ones that happen all too often (just look at Jose Murinho's Chelsea).

In World Class and above, this breaks down. It gets really bad on Legendary. I was tearing my hair out in frustration (thankfully no broken controllers), until I finally "got it" - I have to play a really boring game to have a chance.

Specifically: 442 with possession at all costs. Pass-pass-pass-pass and keep passing, side to side, until an opportunity presents itself. If it doesn't, just keep passing until the penalty shootout. Lay off the sprint button (boy, that was hard to get used to). Learn to use the "hold ball button" (L1). Learn to use the teammate contain button in defense so that someone does cover the CPU's attackers even as my own "in control" player is switched around rapidly and often out of position. And then the clincher - because the latter tactic (teammate contain) would often leave one of the CPU's players open, start each game on ultra-defensive, and pretty much keep it there.

It works, but it's boring. I win games now, but it's usually 1-0, or via penalties. I think out of 50+ games on legendary and ultimate, I scored twice one time. One time! it's horrible. It's no fun at all. It feels like a slog. And I really don't get the point. Why make it that way? I really do miss the headers from FIFA 14 now, and the "invisible shield". At least playing the game was still fun.

Am I the only one who hates playing the highest levels against the CPU because it's downright boring?
