Landon Donovan from Player to Tactician

Hello folks, we are joined today by Fox soccer analyst and former LA Galaxy teammate of Landon Donovan, Cobi Jones to preview this year’s San Jose Earthquakes roster.

Interviewer: Cobi, we are all excited to get the season underway, as a close friend of Landon what are your thoughts on the potential tactics he will use this season?

Cobi: Well, although he was always an attacking player, one thing Landon has told me is that he hates conceding goals, I look for the Earthquake to focus on defense and wait for the goals to come. They will play with three strong defenders, as well as two holding midfielders in front of them to break up play and launch attacks. In front of the holders, Landon will employ a traditional #10, who will be appointed to be the playmaker that picks apart the defense. Supporting him, will be two outside midfielders who must have exceptional pace to get forward and involved in the attack. Lastly, up top he will employ two strikers, one typically a pacier creative player and the other more of a pure poacher.

Interviewer: Cobi, many fans are expecting a strong competition for the goalkeeping spots between Andy Gruenebaum and David Bingham, what are your thoughts on this?

Cobi: Well, at the young age of 24 Bingham probably has slightly more upside than Andy, but I expect the veteran experience of Gruenebaum to win out. Surely he will be on a short leash though and if he struggles expect Bingham to replace him right away.

Interviewer: You mentioned that the Earthquake are expected to play three in the back, how do you expect this back three to play out?

Cobi: Well they will be led for sure by team captain Clarence Goodson. The 31 year old US international is an excellent tackler and leader of the team. Surrounding him will be veteran Honduran center back Victor Bernardez, as well as the very pacey Marvell Wynne. Competing behind them for playing time will be Shaun Francis, Jordan Stewart and Pablo Pintos.

Interviewer: Very interesting, how do you foresee the midfield shaping up?

Cobi: Well the first player in the midfield that I must mention is the #10 and clear playmaker of the team, the little Argentine Matias Perez Garcia. He boosts exceptional technical skills and flair that can create a goal scoring chance at any point in a match. Behind him will be Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Pierazzi, who adds top football experience to the side having played 67 Ligue 1 matches during his time at AC Ajaccio. Next to him will be former outside midfielder Shea Salinas, he can play all over the pitch and should be a versatile piece to Donovans squad. Another player to watch in the center of the midfield is 18 year old Tommy Thompson who has shown rare ability for a young player and should surely see time at all three of these spots. Veteran Jamican Khari Stephenson should also see time off the bench and is competing for minutes with Fatai Alashe and J.J Koval. Out wide is far murkier with Leandro Barrera, fellow countryman to Matias Garcia, Gambian Sanna Nyassi and the 21 year old Trinidad and Tobago national Cordell Cato all making strong claims for the spots. Barrera seems to have the right side locked down, while Cato and Nyassi battle for the left side.

Interviewer: Now for the ones that bring home the glory, who do you see playing up top?

Cobi: Well the starters are set in stone for sure. Innocent Emeghara is probably the most dangerous player on the team, the 24 year old Swiss player has been inconsistent throughout his career, but has tremendous pace and has played in many top leagues already such as Ligue 1 with FC Lorient and the Seria A with Siena and Livorno. He could surely threaten to lead the league in goals. Next to him, is US International poacher Chris Wondolowski. The 31 year old is a 2 time MLS golden boot winner and will create a dangerous tandem with Emeghara. Off the bench Michael Fucito, Adam Jahn and Steven Lenhart will battle it out for playing time. Standing at an imposing 6”3 Jahn is the youngest of the bunch, Lenhart is the most experienced and Fucito is the paciest. This should be a battle to watch.

Interviewer: Thank you for your time Cobi
